At <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />12:00 p.m. today Mr. Rein Lang, the Minister of Justice, will chair the first meeting of the Crime Prevention Council during his term of office.
Mr. Robert Antropov, the Head of the Police Board, will give the members of the Council an overview of the crime statistics in the first half of 2005 and introduce measures for prevention of mobile phone thefts.
Mr. Rait Kuuse, the Head of the Probation Supervision Division of the Ministry of Justice, will make a presentation about the possibilities of probation supervision with respect to reducing the number of imprisoned persons.
"Probation supervision has rapidly developed over the recent years. For instance, the application of community service has grown to 20% of all new probation supervision cases over the last year. However, there is plenty of room for development and in the future probation supervision should become one of the most frequent methods of punishment next to imprisonment," said Mr. Rein Lang, the Minister of Justice.
"In addition to the fact that during probation supervision the probationer does not lose contact with the persons closest to the probationer or with society, the probationer can go to work and Estonian taxpayers do not have to pay for maintaining the probationer."
