On February 26 Justice Minister Rein Lang announced the 15
th anniversary year of the Constitution of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />
Republic of Estonia in the hall of the Council of the
University of Tartu. The logo of the anniversary was also presented.
The events pertaining to the anniversary were introduced by Märt Rask, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Laine Jänes, the Mayor of Tartu, Heiki Sibul, the Director of the Chancellery of the Riigikogu, and Prof. Kalle Merusk, the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />University of Tartu.
According to Lang, one of the central events in the anniversary year is the international legal conference dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Constitution, which will be held September 6-7. “The conference will be organised by the Supreme Court in connection with the Venice Committee,” said the Justice Minister.
On September 7 there will be public festivities on the Toome Hill in Tartu organised by Andres Dvynyaninov. On the same day the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia will be brought from Tallinn to Tartu and preserved in the Supreme Court.
On June 28 there will be discussion in the White Hall of the Castle of Toompea in Tallinn titled "Is this the Constitution we wanted?"
Prof. Kalle Merusk, the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Tartu also announced a competition of research papers pertaining to the anniversary. “Participation in the competition is not limited – any student of an Estonian university may participate," assured Prof. Merusk.
According to Prof. Merusk, the circle of subjects is not limited either. "It is important that the research paper touch upon the Constitution," he said. The deadline for submission of the papers is July 1. The papers need to be submitted to the Faculty of Law of the University of Tartu.
