Minister of Justice Kalle Laanet

Kalle Laanet is the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Estonia from 17. April 2023. He is a member of the Estonian Reform Party. 

  • In 2021–2022, he was the Minister of Defence.
  • In 2007–2021 and 2022–2023, he was a member of the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Riigikogu.

In 2006, he was awarded the Order of the Cross of the Eagle, 3rd class, for the development of the police and for carrying out reforms. Since 2013, he has been an assistant police officer.

The main duty of the Ministry of Justice is to plan and to carry out a legal and criminal policy of the state, which will help ensure an open and secure society, where people may be assured of the use and protection of their rights.

To that end, the Ministry of Justice:

  • shall coordinate, together with other institution, the combat against crime, in order to reduce the damage inflicted upon society by crime and to increase the feeling of security among the population;
  • shall guarantee smoothness of case management by quick and effective proceedings, and by high-quality and available legal assistance;
  • shall guarantee legal certainty and create prerequisites for economic growth by insuring protection of economic rights, effective execution proceeding, availability of notarial services, and quality of court registers;
  • shall strengthen the principles of a democratic state based on the rule of law by helping to guarantee the fundamental rights of the people and by structuring state management.
